The American Army in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War

The sudden war with Spain made clear to many that the United States Army was unprepared for major conflict outside the territorial borders of the United States. Due to the neglect of the American Army, the soldiers endured exceptionally harsh training conditions before being deployed to the Philippines as well as during their journey to Manila. Join ISM and Derrick Rowe as we explore this topic in more detail aboard a ship that fired the first shot in the Spanish-American War.

About Derrick: Derrick Rowe is a PhD student at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in the War Studies Program, where he is studying the soldiers’ experiences in that conflict.  Derrick is also a graduate of Alvernia University, with a BA in history, and a graduate of Norwich University with an MA in military history.  Derrick’s areas of study and interests are the American Empire, the American Civil War and Reconstruction, and the Gilded Age.
