For Liberty in Spain: Philadelphia's Support for the Republican Forces in the Spanish Civil War
Date: November 16, 2024
Time: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Location: Olympia
Come experience the turbulent politics of 1930’s Philadelphia by joining members and friends of the XV Brigada (Reconstituted) as they portray the American Medical Bureau, Friends of the Abraham Lincoln Battalion, and members of Philadelphia’s radical labor movement.
The Spanish Civil War was fought between 1936 and 39, between the Nationalists under Francisco Franco, and the Republicans, made up of various political movements, fighting to maintain democratic government in Spain.
The Republicans received support from the international labor movement, and many unions in Philadelphia raised funds to support their effort. Activists from the city also traveled overseas to fight on the front lines, to serve in the American Medical Bureau, to drive ambulances, to interpret, and to offer administrative support.
Come see their stories brought to life!
