Constructed by New York Shipbuilding Corporation in Camden, New Jersey in 1963, the cruiser USS Truxtun was launched on December 19, 1964. Co-sponsors Mrs. Kirby H. Tappan and Mrs. Scott Umstead both smashed champagne bottles on the Truxtun’s bow, christening the ship. Truxtun served in the Vietnam conflict, earning seven battle stars as well as the Navy Unit Commendation, and was finally decommissioned in 1995.
