Founded in Philadelphia in 1873, the John E. Hand & Sons Company quickly gained a reputation as compass adjusters and manufacturers of quality nautical instruments. The Hand Company built navigational equipment for all varieties of commercial and private floating vessels, working under contract for the United States military during and after World War II.
