  • Talk Like a Pirate Fun (and More!) at the Seaport!
    Friday, September 19 & Saturday, September 20

Avast, me hearties, there'll be a treasure chest of pirate fun at the Seaport on Friday and Saturday, September 19 and 20, to celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

On Friday, Museum visitors will be greeted by a pirate, can find their "inner pirate" with a dip into the pirate name box, and pose in a life-size pirate cut out for a photo – bring a camera!

That evening, the doors will re-open at 6 pm for the final movie in the Seaport Starlight Cinema's 2008 Outdoor Movie Series – The Princess and the Pirate, starring Bob Hope at his wackiest (more on the movie here). The movie is just $4 or free to all dressed like a pirate so dig out your head scarves and gold hoop earrings. The crew of the tall ship Gazela will be in attendance in full pirate regalia.

Before the movie begins at sunset, there will be lots of pirate fun, including a best-dressed pirate contest, pirate trivia contest, talk like a pirate lesson (ye must learn the proper circumstances in which to call someone a "bilge rat" or "scurvy dog"), and the bestowing of the Rare & Coveted Pirate Rubber Ducky Awards.

Bring grub, a blanket, and yer mates, and have a great time under the stars! All moviegoers get a free pirate tattoo and free popcorn.

The next day, Saturday, September 20, enjoy a special $5 admission and return to the Seaport with all your mini pirates and enroll them in "Pirate U."

Each pirate-in-training will receive a "course card" and visit stations throughout the Museum to learn how to talk like a pirate and fire a cannon, make a pirate flag and a navigational sextant, and play Pirate Jeopardy. "Pirate U" graduates will earn pirate diploma.

In addition, a troupe of vagabond actors (from History First Hand) will perform an interactive pirate play in which the young, and young at heart, are full participants.

On the same day just outside the Museum, visitors can enjoy Southeastern Pennsylvania Coast Day, plus tour the Gazela and the Museum's two historic ships – the Spanish-American War Cruiser Olympia and the World War II Submarine Becuna.

Also, on Saturday and Sunday, September 20-21, the Living History Crew of the Olympia will perform live fire gun demonstrations, conduct tours of the Olympia's engine room, and interact in character with the public.
