Enjoy a delightful evening this summer watching a treasure chest of classic and oh-so-campy pirate flicks from the 40s and 50s under the stars in the cozy amphitheater-style outdoor theater on a tucked-away terrace at Independence Seaport Museum on the Delaware River.
See legendary movie idols including Burt Lancaster, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and Bob Hope starring in a cult-favorite swashbuckling spoof, a musical with lavish production numbers and music by Cole Porter, and a hilarious comedy highlighted by the zany antics of Hope.
Bring friends, a blanket, and a picnic supper for an al fresco evening at the "Seaport Starlight Cinema."
Doors open at 8 pm, movies begin at sunset, and at just $4 a person, plus free popcorn, they're a cheap date!
The movies and dates are:
The Crimson Pirate
Tuesday, July 15
Watch an acrobatic and earringed Burt Lancaster in this 1952 campy swashbuckler — Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow has nothing on Lancaster's dashing Captain Vallo! Lancaster was a circus performer before he turned to movies and did all the stunts himself, including a climactic 18-minute battle aboard a frigate, that according to one reviewer, wouldn't be improved on for another three decades until Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark!
Everyone at The Crimson Pirate gets a free pirate eye patch!
The Pirate
Tuesday, August 19
Don't miss this fabulous 1948 musical starring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly, directed by filmmaker extraordinaire Vincent Minelli, and featuring songs by none other than Cole Porter. Though underappreciated at its release, this "golden age" musical has gained a cult status for its lavish production numbers, exotic costumes and sets, and, of course, two of the greatest song and dance stars ever. Garland plays a naïve young girl in the Caribbean and Kelly a traveling performer posing as a lusty pirate to impress her.
The Princess and the Pirate
Friday, September 19
A "Technicolor parody of pirate pictures" and "ridiculous fun," according to Amazon, which lauds Hope's vaudeville shtick, self-effacing gags, double-entendres, and out-of-place show biz jabs. Oh, yes, there's also lovely Virginia Mayo as a princess kidnapped by evil pirates with the hapless Hope as her only hope for rescue, and Walter Brennan as a wacky pirate.
In honor of national Talk Like a Pirate Day, there'll be some extra-special fun and everyone dressed like a pirate gets in free! Aargh! More on our Talk Like a Pirate Day Festivities here »
All movies will be held rain or shine; in the event of inclement weather, the movies will be shown inside the Museum's Concert Hall. RSVPs requested (but not required) at seaport@phillyseaport.org
