Look through BECUNA's periscope

This extraordinary photograph was taken through BECUNA's periscope at 7:30 AM on August 19, 1963 by her commanding officer, Captain Robert J. Anderson.

Submerged in the Mediterranean Sea, BECUNA found the American aircraft carrier SARATOGA steaming in the company of two escorts. Barely visible alongside the massive carrier are the tanker SABINE and the destroyer VESOLE.

The view through BECUNA's periscope has changed a bit since 1963. Compare the historic image with the view today of cars in a nearby parking lot.

"According to my diary we were west of Corsica...It had been fairly dull with just a few encounters until at 0730 we had this fabulous shot...I figured there were about 100,000 tons of target there. What a shame to only have 10 [torpedo] tubes to shoot! Also it was a shame that they were really 'our' guys."
