Independence Seaport Museum and the African American Museum have partnered up to bring both of our visitors special programming that celebrates Black History Month and Afircan American mariners.

Independence Seaport Museum holds a joint Seafarin’ Saturday from noon - 4:30 pm at the African American Museum in Philadelphia. The hands-on activities will include signal flag making, mini-boat building, ship caulking, and knot tying. Participate in a scavenger hunt and a lesson on African-American mariners.
African American Museum is located at 701 Arch St. in Philadelphia.

Independence Seaport Museum in partnership with the African American Museum in Philadelphia will have a display about James Forten at both Museums. James Forten was an African-American businessman and abolitionist who owned and operated his own sailmaking company in Philadelphia after the Revolutionary War.

Independence Seaport Museum hosts Seafarin' Saturdays on the third Saturday of every month, featuring a hands-on activity or craft and a fun but informative "mini lesson" in a different Museum gallery every month. In honor of Black History Month, February's “mini lesson” will focus on African-American sailmaker James Forten, and the activity will be making maritime signal flags. The traditional skill and art of sailmaking will be demonstrated on a historical reproduction of an actual sailmaker’s bench, built by the Museum’s boat shop.

Past to Present – Tattoo Paintings frames the contemporary tattoo flash art movement in its traditional context. The exhibit features flash art (“flash” is the trade name for individual tattoo designs) by a number of recognized contemporary tattooists. Past to Present- Tattoo Paintings has been organized and timed to accompany this year’s Philadelphia Tattoo Convention, February 10-12, 2012 at the Philadelphia Convention Center. The exhibit is curated by Troy Timpel, a Philadelphia-based tattoo artist, creator of clothing line Tattooed Kingpin and organizer of the wildly successful Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention.

All weeks will feature exciting waterfront activities including boat rides ont he Delaware River, rowing in the basin in boats built at our own Workshop on the Water, and tours our our historic ships, cruiser Olympia and submarine, Becuna.
Each week features a different, fun-filled theme:

July 23-27: Time Travel Week
July 30 - August 3: Explorers Week
August 6 -10: First Responders Week
August 13-17: Military Week

Introduction to Celestial Navigation Class

Introduction to Celestial Navigation is designed as a practical, how-to course using GPS for offshore navigation with sun sight taking, using a sextant, as a backup technique. Subject matter includes: basic concepts of celestial navigation; how to use the mariner’s sextant to take sights of the sun; the importance and techniques of accurate time determination; use of the Nautical Almanac; how to reduce sights to establish lines of position (LOPs); and the use of GPS, special charts, plotting sheets and other navigational data for offshore positioning and passage planning.
