An exhibit of nautical photographs that captures the fusion of man, boat, and the sea. The Seaport is the first venue to host this exhibit outside of Mystic Seaport, where the Rosenfeld collection, the world's largest collection of maritime photography, is housed. View 40 luminous images of vintage yachting, powerboat, racing, and leisure boating.

Famed marine artist Ian Marshall speaks about his new book, Cruisers, which features 52 watercolors along with pencil sketches, diagrams, and maps, illustrating 19th and early 20th century steel-built cruisers in the topographical settings in which they would have been seen in their day. The book features Independence Seaport Museum's own Cruiser Olympia. Marshall is the President and Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists and his work hangs in permanent collections all over the world.

BOAT CAMP for Teens!
July 7-August 8, M-F, 9 am-4 pm
Hang out with the cool crew at Workshop on the Water and build a boat this summer. Learn all phases of boatbuilding, use power tools, and tour the Museum, its two historic ships, and other maritime sites.

Secret Symbols in African Textiles & African-American Quits

From traditional African textiles to contemporary African-American quilts, fabric has long been prized for the ways it can tell our stories. Whether traditional clothing, 21st century "ethnic" fashions, or sewn into quilts, this hands-on presentation will unravel the secrety meaning of authentic African textiles such as mud cloth, adinkra designs and kinte. A folkorist from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council who specializes in material culture, Cassandra Stancil Gunkel has documented and studied African-American quilts and textiles and has curated numerous exhibits.

Internationally acclaimed all-women a capella and percussion ensemble that performs a powerfully unique blend of a cappella harmonies and African percussions that spans the African Diaspora.
Behind-the-Scenes Tours of
Cruiser Olympia & Submarine Becuna
First Saturday of every month, 11-3 pm
Explore areas of the Cruiser Olympia, Admiral Dewey's Spanish-American War flagship, and the World War II Submarine Becuna, normally off limits to the public. See the Olympia's triple expansion steam engines, boiler room, and working ash hoist, and the Becuna's conning tower.
