Crossing the Line
Saturday, September 12, 2:30 pm
Hazing at sea will be the topic of a lively presentation describing sailors’ centuries-old shipboard ceremony for crossing the equator. This illustrated talk by Simon Bronner, Ph.D., Distinguished University Professor of American Studies and Folklore at Pennsylvania State University and author of a book on the subject, reveals the sometimes controversial rituals involving role-playing, cross-dressing, initiation rites, and a wild cast of characters that includes King Neptune, Davy Jones, shellbacks, and pollywogs. Followed by Q&A and book signing. Presentation may not be appropriate for children and young adults.
Free with membership or Museum admission. Call 215.413.8640 for more information.

The Museum’s Balcony Tent will also feature vendors selling tattoo memorabilia and clothing, a traditional vaudeville sideshow, tattoo contests, an art show of original tattoo watercolor paintings, and refreshments. Patrons can tour the Seaport’s featured exhibit, Skin & Bones – Tattoos in the Life of the American Sailor, enjoy the festivities under the tent, and get inked by their artist of choice on Olympia.
